Mozilla has released a new version of the web browser Firefox 57 that has a new browser engine Quantum. Also it has a new Project Photon interface, a revised settings panel and a new extension API – WebExtensions.

Firefox 57 (Quantum) is the result of a long work of Mozilla to eliminate previous browser problems, in particular, low speed and frequent disruptions.

However, such global browser changes can create additional problems for Firefox users.

Firefox 57 is a lean, mean browsing machine. Now it uses less RAM than Chrome, your other programs can keep running at top speed.

Multi-tasking with multiple tabs just got easier. Firefox is now a multi-process browser, which means that your tabs stay fresh and won’t take forever to reload. With 86% less hang time, switch quickly between tabs even as you open more.

Now Firefox 57 is bringing better performance to online gaming. This powerful browser reduces lags, speeds up ping times and optimizes overall gameplay through faster, leaner browsing.

Before upgrading to Firefox 57, it is important to know and consider a number of important points.

New Quantum engine Mozilla Firefox 57

Firefox 57 is the first version of Firefox to support the new Quantum browser engine. As announced last year, the Quantum engine replaces some parts of the old Gecko with new components written in Rust and C ++.

Firefox 57 includes even more Project Quantum code. The new version of the browser has Quantum Render. It is a new graphics-optimized rendering service based on Servo’s WebRender project. Furthermore, the browser has a new Quantum DOM Scheduler method that ensures that the background tabs cannot slow down the active tabs of the browser.

Mozilla claims that all these internal changes have led to a significant increase in the speed of loading pages and the operation of the Firefox browser as a whole, although this statement should be taken with a fair amount of skepticism, since all browser developers say the same thing when they launch a new version.

Mozilla Firefox 57 has New Interface

In addition to the new engine, Firefox 57 received a new user interface, built on the basis of Project Photon. Project Photon entirely updates the web browser interface, adds new settings panels, a new page of bookmarks and new sidebars.

In addition, starting with Firefox 57, new versions of Firefox will be shipped with a disabled search widget that was previously displayed in the upper right corner of the old UI Firefox and was a significant part of it. On the positive side, if desired, users can re-enable the old search widget in the settings panel.

Scheduled changes to the user interface are likely to irritate some Firefox users, because the addition of Classic Theme Restorer Firefox will also stop working, which means that users will not be able to control the appearance of the browser.

If you do not like the new user interface, you might want to pay attention to other browsers.

In addition to these global changes, Firefox 57 received minor improvements, such as the ability to include protection against tracing on an ongoing basis.

New extension API – WebExtensions

The biggest problem can be with the new Firefox add-ons system – the WebExtensions API.

The new WebExtensions API is compatible with the WebExtensions standard, which is supported by Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, Vivaldi, Opera) and the new Microsoft Edge browser. This means that many developers of extensions for Chrome can adapt their products to work in Firefox.

Mozilla announced the beginning of work on the implementation of support for the WebExtensions API in the summer of 2015, and in August 2016 already introduced a new API with the release of Firefox 48.

Starting with version 57, Firefox will only support extensions built on the new API, and completely abandon the old XUL-based technology inherited from the Netscape project.

Thus, Firefox users have to look for alternatives for obsolete add-ons created on the old SDK.

Mozilla changed the Firefox Add-ons portal to show only the WebExtensions compatible plug-ins by default. Currently, only about 6,000 of the more than 20,000 Firefox add-ons have been migrated to the new API. This means that for some extensions, there may not be an alternative.

As a result, users will be at a disadvantage and they will have to make a choice – to refuse a favorite add-on or to switch to a new browser where the required extension works.

Whether you’re using Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7 or macOSwith Firefox, you’ll also enjoy hardware acceleration for many common operations. Such as watching videos or playing games.
